Ruh Events: How They Work and How to Get Involved

A guide to Ruh’s event model, event types, compensation, and how to bring an opportunity to the team

Written by Muktadir Mir

Events are one of the most powerful ways we build trust with the community and show up as a mental health resource people can turn to.

Whether you have an event idea, have been approached by a community organization, or simply want to become more involved in Ruh programming, this article is your starting point.

It covers:

  • The different types of Ruh events

  • How an event moves from an idea to delivery

  • What support Ruh provides

  • Current therapist event rates

  • Who to contact about an opportunity

For detailed roles and expectations before, during, and after an event, please also review Ruh Events Policy for Therapists.

Event Types

Not every event is the same. We classify events according to their primary purpose, participant experience, and intended outcome, rather than referring to every session as a workshop.

Every Ruh event should still include an appropriate interactive element, such as audience questions, discussion, reflection, polls, Slido prompts, or another form of participation.

Category

Primary Purpose

Participant Experience

Typical Outcome

Event

Connection, engagement, awareness, or community-building, tabling/boothing

Attendees listen, connect, participate in discussion, or engage with Ruh

Participants feel connected, informed, or introduced to Ruh and its services

Psychoeducation Event

Increase understanding of a mental health topic

Primarily presentation-based, with optional discussion or Q&A

Participants leave with greater awareness and practical general knowledge

Workshop

Help participants apply concepts to their own lives or settings

Interactive exercises, reflection, discussion, scenarios, or guided activities

Participants leave with practical tools they have begun practising

Training

Build professional or role-specific knowledge and competency

Structured instruction, applied practice, case studies, frameworks, and possibly assessment

Participants are better prepared to perform a responsibility or implement a framework

Crisis Response

Provide timely, clinically grounded support following a community crisis, tragedy, or significant event

Participants develop further awareness, are introduced to grounding tools, facilitated support, and guidance on accessing further care

Community members feel supported, better understand common responses to difficult events, and know where to seek additional help

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I propose an event to Ruh?

Yes! We always welcome ideas for different topics, audiences, communities, organizations, and partnerships.

Contact the Events Coordinator with:

  • Your event idea or proposed topic

  • The audience you would like to reach

  • Any organization or community you have in mind

  • Whether you have already spoken with a potential partner

  • Your preferred role in the event

Q: I was contacted directly by a community organization. Do I need to involve Ruh?

You are welcome to participate in independent opportunities outside of Ruh.

However, an event should be brought to the Ruh team before it is represented, promoted, or confirmed as a Ruh event.

Bringing Ruh into the opportunity allows you to receive support with design, marketing, administration, partner coordination, agreements, and honorarium collection. It may also make the opportunity eligible for Ruh’s therapist event rates.

For events delivered through Ruh, please do not independently finalize the event title, format, timing, marketing copy, recording arrangements, or payment terms with the partner. Send the opportunity to the Events Coordinator so the details can be confirmed properly on your behalf. Keeping Ruh looped in also allows our team to support you throughout the process, including negotiating an appropriate honorarium on your behalf, clarifying scope and expectations, coordinating logistics, and ensuring agreements around compensation, recording, and content use are properly documented before you commit.

Q: I have already started planning an event. Can I still loop Ruh in?

Yes! Contact the Events Coordinator and share what has already been discussed or confirmed. The team will review what support can be provided and clarify whether the event will move forward as an official Ruh event.

Q: Can Ruh help me develop an event idea?

Yes! You do not need to arrive with a completed presentation or fully developed concept, we are happy to bring your creativity and the needs you notice in the community to life.

Q: Who communicates with the partner?

The Events Coordinator is the primary point of contact with the partner. You will be added to a “Your Name <> Programs” Whatsapp chat for internal communication and a Whatsapp chat with the organizing partner if applicable for external communications.

Therapists may participate in planning conversations where helpful, but changes to the scope, title, timing, format, recording, marketing, or compensation are routed through the Events Coordinator.

Have an Event Idea?

If you have an idea for an event, a community or organization you'd love to bring Ruh to, or a topic you're passionate about presenting on, we want to hear it! Reach out to Mahrukh, our Events Coordinator at [email protected] to share your idea or make an introduction.
